Catherine Tramell is a novelist. The novels she writes are about murder, crime, sex, and violence. However, the plot of her novels also mirrors to a string of murders she commits. When publishing her novels, she goes by her pen name Catherine Woolf. Catherine is the daughter of the late Marvin and Elaine Tramell, the fiancé of the late Manuel "Manny" Vásquez, the girlfriend of the late Johnny Boz, the late Detective Nick Curran, and the late Roxanne "Roxy" Hardy.
In 1979, at the age of 19, her parents, Marvin and Elaine Tramell, died in a boating, leaving her with an inheritance of $110 million. However, upon further inspection of the accident by Detective Sam Andrews, it is revealed that there was a gas leak and two previous repairs, which caused the boat to explode. It also mirrors one of her novels, The First Time, written years later, in which a boy kills his parents to see "if he could get away with it", implying she caused the accident to get the inheritance because, according to Andrews, there was a $5 million dollar policy on both of them.
In 1983, at the age of 23, she double-majored in literature and psychology at UC, Berkeley, graduating magna cum laude. In 1984, age 24, she was engaged to Manuel "Manny" Vásquez, a middleweight boxer who was killed in a ring in Atlantic City.
